Treacle Tart

Treacle tart has always been the go to desert in our house, there is always boxes and boxes of it in our sweet cupboard! I occasionally made my own version when I was young and I thought I would bring it back for the blog today...
I slightly cheated and used Jus Roll (which is vegan) shortcrust pastry just to make things alot quicker! The whole tart will take about 45 minutes to cook and make so would make a great last minute desert served warm with lashings of dairy free ice cream. We used wholemeal bread to give it a richer colour and to make it ever so slightly healthier! Oh and did we say it is vegan too?

Ingredients:                                                                                                 Equipment:
Half a block of shortcrust pastry (we used Jus Roll)                               Rolling Pin
8 slices of a small wholemeal loaf                                                            Flan tin or cake tin
3 heaped tablespoons of golden syrup                                                   Grater
Lemon- juice and zest                                                                                 Bowl
                                                                                                                        Tablespoon
                                                                                                                        Electric food chopper
                                                                                                                        Baking beans

Method:
  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C
  2. Roll your half block of pastry out onto a clean, lightly floured surface. Make sure you roll it out enought that it will fit into your tin.
  3. Lightly flour your tin and place your rolled out pastry inside, making sure to lightly press the pastry into all the sides and trim off the excess pastry.
  4. Pierce the bottom of your pastry with a fork to help prevent the pastry from puffing up. Line a piece of foil ontop of your pastry and add in your baking beans.
  5. Put in the oven for 10 minutes, remove the foil and beans, and cook for a further15 minutes.
  6. Whilst the pastry is in the oven, place your bread into the chopper (you might have to do this in stages) and blitz until you get breadcrumbs. Put these in your bowl.
  7. Zest your lemon and add to the bowl with the juice from your lemon.
  8. Use 3 heaped tablespoons of golden syrup and mix until the bread is thoroughly coated.
  9. Put the mixture into your pastry and press down until it forms an even surface. Pop this back into the oven for 10-15 minutes until set.

Enjoy!
